Performance reporting and
accountability for national reform
Australians live on the driest inhabited continent in the world, and we face major challenges in ensuring sustainable water supply in the face of a drying climate and rising demand for water.
The Agreement on Murray-Darling Basin Reform provides the framework for the Commonwealth and the Basin States—NSW, Victoria, Queensland, South Australia and the ACT—to establish a ‘new culture and practice of Basin-wide management and planning, through new structures and partnerships’. This approach recognises that cooperative partnerships between the Commonwealth and all States and Territories are the key to addressing the water challenge across the country.
Water Management Partnerships take the form of bilateral agreements between the Commonwealth and the five Murray-Darling Basin States. These agreements provide for payments to the Basin States for implementation of specific projects, taking into account their progress in achieving water reforms.
